Going to do a rack rental tonight since I’m going to do multicast labs. From what I’ve heard Dynamips has some issues with multicast, not sure if it still has issues but I’ll do a rack rental to not spend time on troubleshooting Dynamips when I could spend the time labbing and troubleshooting multicast. What is your experience with Dynamips and multicast? If you’ve tried it please leave a comment.
Multicast session booked for tonight
I had some issues with Dynamips and Multicast two days ago. My lab setup consists of 4 physical switches that are connected via 3 quad ethernet nics to Dynamips on an Ubuntu server.
The problemes occured in the R1-R4-R6 (INE topology) multiaccess segment. R6’s interface started to flap and had a lot of packet loss. Especially after configuring the router for Auto-RP or when sending test traffic that traverses the router. R4 and R1 didn’t have any problems.
I’ll do some multicast labs this week again. I’m curious if those are really Dynamips issues. But I couldn’t find any other serious configuration mistakes in my lab 😉
Hi Jochen,
Thanks for your reply. That sounds similar to what I’ve heard that pings from some routers will be successful and not from others and that pings that were sucessful before later timeout etc. Someone said that increasing timeout could help when trying to ping. There was/is an issue with the GT96k FastEthernet controller that is emulated. You can read the thread at http://ieoc.com/forums/p/3488/16696.aspx
Hey Daniel, thanks for the link. It describes exactly the issues I had. Which is now clear to me, since I’m using 3725 routers with GT96k.
I think I’ll also rent some rack time for multicast labs. This should be cheaper than buying 1841 routers on Ebay.
